HYDROXYPROPYL METHYLCELLULOSE PHTHALATE (HPMCP) is a pH-sensitive cellulose derivative obtained by the partial esterification of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) with phthalic anhydride. It is a white to off-white, free-flowing powder that is insoluble in water and acidic media but soluble in intestinal fluid above pH 5.0. This enteric solubility property makes HPMCP an ideal polymer for enteric coating applications in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
APPLICATIONS:
1. PHARMACEUTICALS:
HPMCP is primarily used as an enteric coating polymer for tablets, capsules, and granules to prevent the release of active ingredients in the stomach and ensure targeted release in the intestine. It protects acid-sensitive drugs (such as enzymes, probiotics, and certain antibiotics) from gastric fluids and minimizes gastric irritation from certain APIs.
2. NUTRACEUTICALS & DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS:
In nutraceutical formulations, HPMCP is used for controlled and delayed-release coatings of vitamins, enzymes, and herbal actives. It ensures optimal absorption and bioavailability by allowing release in the intestinal tract.
3. OTHER APPLICATIONS:
HPMCP can also function as a film-forming agent and stabilizer in specific industrial coatings where pH-dependent solubility is desired. It is compatible with various plasticizers and solvents used in coating systems.
